Don’t be afraid of ‘me’ (Part 3)

I do too.

Me too – or is that I too?

Strictly speaking, I too is grammatically correct.

But these days, it seems very stiff and unnatural to most speakers. And so, me too has become acceptable and standard English.

The same goes for it’s me.

In the past, it’s I was deemed correct (because the pronoun after the verb to be was supposed to act like a subject).

Which also meant that if someone asked for you on the phone and you wanted to confirm it was you, This is she or This is he would have been the correct and formal way to respond.

These days, the easiest way to confirm it’s you on the phone is to answer: Speaking.

And nowadays, it’s me, that’s her, that’s him and that’s them are all ok in everyday and professional life.
